Thailand's Vegetarian Festival: Nine Days of Restraint

The annual Taoist vegetarian festival transforms Thai towns each October. On Koh Samui, it is observed quietly and sincerely.

Thailand's Vegetarian Festival: Nine Days of Restraint

There is a particular hour, on Koh Samui, when the island remembers itself. The light changes, the frangipani opens, and the longtails come back to their moorings in a rhythm that has not changed in fifty years.

We tend to walk a property at this hour, when we can. The buildings that understand the wind, the shade, the way the southwest breeze finds its way through deep eaves and across polished concrete — they reveal themselves only now. The ones that do not, also reveal themselves.

This is the hour the photographs in our book were taken. Not because of fashion, but because it is the hour the houses are most truly themselves.

We do not sell square metres. We place sanctuaries — quietly, into careful hands.
